Our Mission
Kelowna’s Gospel Mission is a not-for-profit, Christian organization that cares for thousands of hungry, hurting and homeless people every year since 1978. We work closely with government, businesses, community, faith groups, service providers, residents and the people we serve, creating solutions for long-term change.
We lead people who are bent, bruised and broken to wholeness and successful living.
We desire to see lives changed by practically demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ and meeting each individual’s spiritual, physical, emotional and social needs.
Our History
Kelowna’s Gospel Mission has its origins in the caring hearts of a handful of students from Okanagan Bible School who, in 1977, wanted to reach out to the transient population in Kelowna City Park. Along with their Christian Service director Marshall Calverley, they visited the park on Saturday afternoons to talk to people and provide Gospel tracts and cups of warm coffee. Their dedication continued into the fall and as the weather became colder, the need for an indoor facility was obvious.
A drop-in centre was opened where people could find warmth, receive a cup of coffee, and find a listening ear. The ministry was filling a void and growth continued. In February 1978, Kelowna’s Gospel Mission Society was formed, offering a complete soup kitchen and its first full-time employee director, Frank Koop.
Today, we are a full-service organization, with our services ranging from emergency care such as shelter and meals to long-term recovery and dental services. We’re changing lives every day… helping people stand on their own, restoring broken spirits, leading them to wholeness.
We believe every person deserves another chance, a place to call their own within a caring community where they are treated with dignity and respect.
